The next morning, still wallowing in post-coital bliss, I make my weak-kneed way off Lewis’ private jet. I’m met by a very shiny black Mercedes and a tall man in a suit.

“Ms. Bolton? Mr. Wensel has asked me to drive you home,” the tall man says, reaching out to take my purse and the giant orange hoodie.

“Oh,” I say. “Thank you. That’s very kind.” In my head, I’m already writing the thank you text I’m going to send once I’m sitting down again. I can’t believe how thoughtful Lewis is.

The tall man drops me off at my front door and I make my way upstairs to our apartment feeling like I’m in a dream. I’m not sure what seems more unreal: that I just spent the most amazing 24 hours of my life with Lewis Wensel, or that I’m suddenly back in my tiny apartment in L.A.

I reach into my purse for my keys, but the apartment door opens before I can find them.

“There you are! Oh my god, I’ve been so worried!” Avery stands in our door, looking a little frantic.

I feel a pang of guilt. I should probably have texted her…

“Avery, I’m so sorry! I…I ended up staying the night in San Francisco. I totally forgot to text,” I reply, doing my best to look penitent.

Avery shakes her head. “You stayed the night? I was wondering. I came home last night and you weren’t here and the car wasn’t here and then this morning when I woke up…I thought you’d had an accident or something!”

“No, no. Nothing bad happened,” I reassure her as I kick off my shoes.

“Why’d you end up staying the night?” she asks. “Wasn’t it really expensive to get a place at the last minute?”

“Uhh…no, it wasn’t…too bad. And, well, I’ve never been to San Francisco before. I wanted to see it.”

“Savannah…” Avery narrows her eyes at me. “What aren’t you telling me?”

“Nothing,” I stutter back. But I’ve never been able to lie to Avery. She always sees right through me.

“Savannah, spill!”

I make a face. Then, before I can stop myself, I’m telling her everything. I’m so excited to share my happiness with someone that I don’t even want to stop.

But when I’ve finished, Avery doesn’t look happy for me. “Savannah, are you crazy? Are you seriously going to risk this job for a quick fling with some billionaire playboy? You’re going to get kicked off the production and get your heart broken at this rate.”

I blink, surprised by her vehemence. “No, I won’t. We’ve agreed to keep everything a secret.”

“Yeah, so he can keep seeing other people behind your back,” Avery replies, crossing her arms.

“No, he won’t. Lewis isn’t like that,” I protest. “Really, Avery. We just have to get through the next six weeks and everything is going to be fine.”

Avery doesn’t look convinced. “If you say so,” is all she says as she heads past me into the living room.

Alone in the hallway, I make a face. Why can’t Avery just be happy for me? Lately, she’s been acting so weird and I don’t know how to make it better.
